Edgar Allen Poe: Buried Alive
PBS American Masters presents the tortured life and mysterious death of a global icon of modern literature.
This film was enormous fun to make. I pushed the visual style using layers of dark and light, old and new, mobile and static, and worked to integrate music and sound design in ways that are unusual in this genre.

“A stirring study of the iconic writer’s life and legacy, writer-director Eric Stange’s film does its level best to uncover the real Poe buried under so many misconceptions, slanders and false assumptions. There certainly have been no shortage of documentaries about Poe. But on content, style, and spirit, Buried Alive is the best yet. It’s a handsomely produced, well-paced account that never suffers from a certain detached quality that tends to drain Poe studies of energy and vitality. No such power shortage here. Buried Alive brings Poe to robust life as a complex artist who was so much more than just a trader in nightmares.”
