Murder of the Century

The opening episode of PBS’ American Experience about the 1906 murder of celebrity architect Stanford White, who was shot in the rooftop cabaret atop Madison Square Garden that he himself had designed.  Murder of the Century examines the opulent world of wealthy New York in the Gilded Age, conflicts over morality between the rich and middle class and the rise of a tabloid "yellow" press that encouraged and fed the public's hunger for more and more sensational stories.

The American Experience begins its eighth season tonight at 9 with an elegantly appointed account of a turn of the century sensation.” –New York Times
“Producer Carl Charlson brilliantly mixes social commentary with vintage footage of the period. Instead of pointing fingers, he allows the material to tell the story.  It’s a crisp, quick hour that sets a formidable standard for the rest of this season’s American Experience.”
